Samsung presented the new S10 series and a foldable smartphone named “Galaxy Fold” at its Unpacked event. The device is to come for the price of $2200 in May in the trade.
The flat Smartphone has a rather small screen by current standards with a diagonal of 4.6 inches on the front. When you open it but folds out a 7.3-inch tablet display.
Samsung advertises that you can seamlessly switch between screens within an app. If you open the Google maps on the small display, you will see the same spot when unfolding – but in a larger section and with more information.
In addition, Samsung insists that network operators will use the device as a platform for their media content. Therefore, the Fold devices could be generously subsidized, at least for high-priced mobile phone contracts.
S10 comes in March
As early as March, three more models of the new S10 series will be on the market, as Samsung announced on Wednesday in San Francisco. New on the Galaxy S10 is, among other things, a fingerprint scanner with ultrasound technology integrated directly into the screen.
The camera now only needs a circular cutout in the upper right corner of the screen – so the display fills almost the entire front. On the back, the third camera was added an ultra-wide-angle lens. The phones can also charge other devices such as the new Samsung earphones or the computer clock Galaxy Watch Active contactless.
All you have to do is put it on the back of the smartphone. The Galaxy S10 has a screen diagonal of 6.1 inches, the model S10 + comes to 6.4 inches. The S10 + costs in the most expensive version $1800 – but has a terabyte built-in storage capacity and a housing made of ceramic composite.
The cheaper version S10e is smaller with 5.8 inches and from $850 to have. Among other things, Samsung renounced the third camera lens on the back. The 5G model, on the other hand, has been upgraded beyond the ultra-fast data transmission with other features.
This includes another rear-side camera for depth measurement for better photo effects and Augmented Reality (AR) applications. The screen is even larger with a diagonal of 6.7 inches.
Early focus on 5G Market
Samsung sees no problem in bringing the 5G phone before the launch of such networks. “It can change so quickly,” said Samsung Manager. “It was important for us to be able to deliver 5G with a high-end smartphone.
And if the network operators are ready, they will use it too. “5G offers enormous opportunities for network operators. Samsung is also involved in the network technology business and provides equipment for a 5G test installation by Telefonica in Hamburg.
With its S-series Samsung enters the upper segment of the smartphone market against the iPhones from Apple. The two suppliers traditionally present their top models at intervals of half a year and compete for innovative functions.
For example, the next generation iPhone is expected to get another camera in the fall and charge other devices wirelessly, as the industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects. Samsung and Apple were clearly the number one and two in the market for years, meanwhile, the competition of Chinese suppliers is increasing. Most prominently, Huawei displaced Apple from second place in the market after device sales last year.
Foldable Smartphones on Trend
The foldable Galaxy Fold “is completely ready for the market and we will definitely sell it on the German market in the second quarter,” said Samsung manager Winter. “The network operators are very interested in the product – also because they can play their content on the big screen.” Samsung had already shown a prototype of the Fold last November and now presented the production model a few days before the industry show Mobile World Congress.
According to market observers, other providers such as Xiaomi from China could also present their folding devices there. The competition from China changed the business, as also Samsung manager Winter admitted. “We need to be even faster in development, move things forward quickly, not show any prototypes, but go to market.” This applies to both the premium market – such as the Galaxy Fold – as well as for mid-priced equipment.
Ultimately, consumers are the beneficiaries of increased competition. Samsung also wants to bring its networked speaker Galaxy Home on board with the in-house language assistant Bixby on board in April, said top manager DJ Koh of the tech website “CNET”.
