The Samsung Galaxy A40 is one of the many representatives of this range of smartphones in 2019. The latter aims a quality / price attractive. Is this quest accomplished? Here is our complete test to find out.
Design of Samsung Galaxy A40
The Samsung Galaxy A40 has no big physical peculiarities. In fact, he has none. But that does not prevent it from being pretty cute thanks to its well-proportioned format.
We regularly complain about the disappearance of small smartphones, but models such as this one still struggle against this trend.
This is reminiscent of the Galaxy S10e (14.2 cm) although the latter is a little smaller than the Galaxy A40 (14.4 cm).
The remarks will be quite similar in terms of weight: with only 141.5 grams on the scale, the Galaxy A40 will be light in your palm.
Beyond that, we note a discreet notch on the front of the phone very similar to that of the Galaxy A50. The bottom border is visible, but does not shock, especially not in this price range.
In the back
The plastic back with glass effect projects beautiful reflections, but also dirty too quickly. There is the fingerprint reader and the dual camera. The latter is positioned vertically in the upper left corner. On the bottom edge, we are entitled to USB-C and 3.5 mm jack.
Camera of Samsung Galaxy A40
It has already been briefly said: it is a double camera that can be found on the back with 16 + 5 megapixel definitions. We end up with a main sensor that, depending on your desires, can leave room for the ultra-wide angle.
What do the photos do? It is not a surprise, in good light conditions, the main sensor produces good quality images with colors relatively faithful to reality and a rather accurate rendering. On this point, you will not be disappointed.
Screen of Samsung Galaxy A40
On this Galaxy A40, there is a 5.9-inch AMOLED display with a definition of 2340 x 1080 pixels (Full HD +). The slab is of good quality and offers a deep contrast and a rather high maximum brightness that we measured at 527 cd / m².
Personally, I did not have any particular concern to distinguish what was displayed, even in full sun. Conversely, I found that in automatic mode, the brightness took a little too long to go down.
Audio of Samsung Galaxy A40
The Samsung Galaxy A40’s speaker is pretty bad. It saturates quickly, compresses the sounds a lot and is not very powerful.
The copy is much more attractive to the headphones, especially wired. The audio quality is more “complete”, with a rendering that makes it better enjoy listening to the song, even if the bass lack a little amplitude.
If you have a headset on your ears, think about activating the Dolby Atmos option that gives more body to the music. Improving listening comfort is noticeable.
Software of Samsung Galaxy A40
The software part of this smartphone is driven by the excellence of the One UI home interface, based on Android 9.0 Pie. We will make the same remarks here as on the Galaxy A50.
The user experience can be summed up in a few words: modern, pleasant and customizable. A dark and available mode as well as a navigation by gestures to the Samsung – which does not take again the same logic as on Pixel Launcher.
We often repeated that One UI was very well adapted to large screens. Here, this advantage is perhaps a little less noticeable on a diagonal of 5.9 inches, but do not spit in the soup, it remains very practical.
To learn more about the software part of the Galaxy A40, do not hesitate to watch the part dedicated to the software in our test of the Galaxy A50.
The Exynos 7885 of the Samsung Galaxy A40 is a small limited in 2019, at least when compared to the competition. Coupled here with 4 GB of RAM, it will be able to be effective on the least complex tasks.
It will therefore be appropriate for the vast majority of users daily despite some small display bugs quite infrequent. But keep in mind that we are very far from the power that smartphones in the same price segment can achieve.
The Samsung Galaxy A40 has a battery of 3100 mAh. In use, I did not find his excellent autonomy, but it is rather satisfactory.
As on the Galaxy A50, I realized that opening multiple apps at the same time tired him much faster than when he had one to three apps to manage at the same time. In concrete terms, a fairly active day will not reduce the phone’s energy reserves to nothing.
Feel free to start a few photo sessions, surf the web and watch videos on YouTube. By quickly linking application openings, you will not be able to stay that long.
