Windows 10 was released in the summer of 2015. From this point in time, Microsoft allowed users of the previous versions Windows 7 and 8 for a year to switch to Windows 10 for free.
Since the expiry of this period, Windows 10 is officially three-digit book: For Windows 10 Home requires Microsoft $165, Windows 10 Pro costs a whopping $300. For a while, there was an official backdoor to continue the upgrade for free.

After startup, the handy Microsoft tool checks to see if the computer is compatible with Windows 10, and initiates the download and install the upgrade, if applicable.
In the tests for this article, the free upgrade worked perfectly, but those interested should hurry: Microsoft can cut off the connection of the Windows 10 Update Wizard to its servers at any time.
An alternative is the reinstallation of Windows 10: So far, it was namely possible to unlock the new operating system with a license key of Windows 7 or 8. Whether and when Microsoft closes this loophole, the Group has not yet revealed. A step-by-step guide can be found below in the photo gallery.

Windows 10 Upgrade:
Who can use it? The free upgrade works on all versions of Windows 7 and 8: Windows 7 Starters, Home Basic, Home Premium or Windows 8 Core users will then receive Windows 10 Home.
Owners of the higher-end variants Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Windows 8 Pro get Windows 10 in the Pro edition.
For Windows 8, upgrading will only work after the – also free – upgrade to version 8.1. This is Windows 8.1 with Bing upgrade pricing; the special version is installed on low-cost devices. In the tube look XP and Vista users: They have Windows 10 to buy.
Which version of Windows should it be?
You do not need to be confused given the many Windows 10 variants. Who uses PC or notebook, has only two versions to choose from: Home and Pro.
Usually, the cheap home version is sufficient because you do not need the advanced features of the Pro version. The suitable version installs itself during the upgrade without a separate selection.
The same applies if you type in the setup program a serial number of Windows 7/8 (.1). To avoid data loss during the upgrade procedure, it is important that the architecture (32 or 64 bit) of the systems is identical.
If you do not start the upgrade via the setup DVD, but via the Windows notification or the Windows 10 Update Wizard, you will not think about it.
