How to upgrade Windows 10 for free

Windows 10 was released in the summer of 2015. From this point in time, Microsoft allowed users of the previous versions Windows 7 and 8 for a year to switch to Windows 10 for free.

Since the expiry of this period, Windows 10 is officially three-digit book: For Windows 10 Home requires Microsoft $165, Windows 10 Pro costs a whopping $300. For a while, there was an official backdoor to continue the upgrade for free.

However, this finally closed how you can still upgrade your Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 for free!

Special tool to Upgrade Windows 10 for free

A free upgrade requires a special tool: the so-called Windows 10 Update Wizards available for download – and in a brand new version!

After startup, the handy Microsoft tool checks to see if the computer is compatible with Windows 10, and initiates the download and install the upgrade, if applicable.

In the tests for this article, the free upgrade worked perfectly, but those interested should hurry: Microsoft can cut off the connection of the Windows 10 Update Wizard to its servers at any time.

An alternative is the reinstallation of Windows 10: So far, it was namely possible to unlock the new operating system with a license key of Windows 7 or 8. Whether and when Microsoft closes this loophole, the Group has not yet revealed. A step-by-step guide can be found below in the photo gallery.

Windows 10 upgrade for free:

That’s behind it the trick that allows the free upgrade. Who starts under Windows 7 or 8.1 the program “Windows 10 Update Assistant” from Microsoft, continues to increase free of charge to the current version of Windows.

To download the small tool from Microsoft, the PC user just had to confirm that he needed “assistive technologies” in Windows – including magnifier and on-screen keyboard, reading, and voice output.

With this accessibility upgrade, Microsoft wanted to ensure that physically challenged PC users would continue to benefit from enhanced accessibility features in Windows 10 after July 29, 2016.

Windows 10 Upgrade: Fix the error message

In the tests for this article, Windows Update Assistant showed the error message “The program cannot be started on some PCs because API-ms-win-core-library loader-l1-1-1.dll is missing on the computer”.

In this case, click OK and replace the file wimgapi.dllin the folder “C: \ Windows10Upgrade” with the file of the same name from the folder “C: \ Windows \ System32”.

Then, in the Windows 10 Update Wizard, click Try again to continue the upgrade whether you use one of the features mentioned, Microsoft did not check.

Accordingly, even “unauthorized” customers took advantage of the loophole to avoid the costs of the regular upgrade.

Windows 10 Upgrade:

Who can use it? The free upgrade works on all versions of Windows 7 and 8: Windows 7 Starters, Home Basic, Home Premium or Windows 8 Core users will then receive Windows 10 Home.

Owners of the higher-end variants Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Windows 8 Pro get Windows 10 in the Pro edition.

For Windows 8, upgrading will only work after the – also free – upgrade to version 8.1. This is Windows 8.1 with Bing upgrade pricing; the special version is installed on low-cost devices. In the tube look XP and Vista users: They have Windows 10 to buy.

Which version of Windows should it be?

You do not need to be confused given the many Windows 10 variants. Who uses PC or notebook, has only two versions to choose from: Home and Pro.

Usually, the cheap home version is sufficient because you do not need the advanced features of the Pro version. The suitable version installs itself during the upgrade without a separate selection.

The same applies if you type in the setup program a serial number of Windows 7/8 (.1). To avoid data loss during the upgrade procedure, it is important that the architecture (32 or 64 bit) of the systems is identical.

If you do not start the upgrade via the setup DVD, but via the Windows notification or the Windows 10 Update Wizard, you will not think about it.
