Dell XPS 13 2019: New Generation Has The Cam in The Right Place

Dell XPS 13

As always, Dell will showcase the latest generation of the XPS 13 at the Las Vegas CES. Much has not happened, but be sure to note the placement of the webcam.

At CES 2019, Dell unveiled a new generation of its successful premium XPS 13 notebook. A criticism of the predecessor models Dell has fixed.

Dell XPS 13 – Four years Innovation Lead

I was really excited. One has to be aware of the following: We had never seen a device that even had such a thin frame. Specifically, that was just 5.2 millimeters at the time, which undercut ASUS 2019 by almost half. However, I was not the only one who was so impressed by the new XPS 13: Until August 2015, I had to wait for a test device from Dell. So much was this thing.

Acer Swift 7I then asked me: how long will it take the other manufacturers to overtake Dell in terms of display? HP had almost frameless received the Specter x360 in 2017 only on the sides, but by no means was it at the level of the XPS 13.

Acer’s flagship end of 2016 is shown here. That was almost two years after the launch of the first new Dell XPS 13. Today I know the answer to this question: Proud four years.

Huawei made it last year, and in January 2019, Acer, ASUS and other manufacturers provided their answers to the Dell XPS 13 of 2015. Partly in 17-inch format.

Dell fixes the webcam Dell put a lot of effort into developing the webcam for the XPS 13 (9380). Because one oft-voiced criticism of the predecessor models was the positioning of the webcam under the display.

Dell fixes the “biggest problem” of the XPS 13

Dell XPS 13

Why am I describing this in such detail? Because Dell wants to fix a problem with the new XPS 13. Due to the very thin edge, the camera could only be positioned under the display in the past.

Granted, I had noted in every test of the Dell XPS 13, that the camera the user thereby unfavorably filming. Was that problematic? Only for business users and I am not if I consciously buy a consumer flagship.

I can not remember the last time I made a video call privately on the PC. One thing bothered me most of all: In the lower part of the display, so to speak the “chin”, Dell had always affixed a huge logo and then moved the camera to the lowest left corner.

The bottom frame of the Dell XPS 13 always reminded me of these black bars in 21: 9 videos, simply because the rest of the edges were otherwise so small. Huawei also has a logo on the front of the MateBook X Pro, but only the brand as a small spelled out word and not the whole Huawei motive.

This is also necessary with the Huawei notebook because otherwise you could keep it smooth from the front for a MacBook. The Dell XPS 13 has a lot of recognition from the front. It does not need a logo in my opinion.

The Dell XPS 13 was never exceptional, at least not only to me because of its appearance. Especially after testing the then-new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, I realized what a good job the company had done in cooling the device. Without a fan, the small notebook with the Core i7 processor of the Y series kept the clock rates high even in the summer and the performance was practically at the level of notebooks with fans. Dell has always done a good job on thermal, processing, displays and battery life.

The Dell XPS 13 2019 can expect significant improvements in this regard. On the one hand there are very bright 400 Nits displays with 100% coverage of the sRGB color space, new Intel Core processors of the 8th generation plus even further improved cooling thanks to the use of Gore as insulation material. The Dell XPS 13 should therefore remain a little cooler and quieter under load while it can maintain the good performance longer.

Dell XPS 13 2019: Prices and Availability

The model name of the new Dell XPS 13 in 2019 is 9380 and it will be available from $ 899 in the US. The launch day was already their January 8, but there is currently only the black / silver version with UHD non-touch display and the rose gold / white edition with UHD touch display to buy.

In short: The Dell XPS 13 is Better Than Ever

Dell XPS 13

While the other manufacturers (finally) left Dell at the display margins in 2019, in my opinion, Dell set the focus wrong. I’m wondering if changing the camera position may not be responsible for a loud minority, and the positioning is completely unimportant to the average consumer.

Does not the Dell XPS 13 have any other problems? Well, no, not really. The keyboard is not bad, but it could be better. As a product developer, I would have started here first. Dell did not mention a better keyboard in the news release, so I suspect it’s still the old one. As I said, it’s not bad, but that’s a point that could have been improved on the Dell XPS 13.

And then there’s the carbon fiber look on the keyboard’s hand rest. I know that’s real carbon fiber and that Dell wants to show that, but it does not look pretty.

Especially if the back is silver, the sides dull black and then the keyboard tray with the patterned look of the series dances. In the car industry, carbon fiber is no longer the latest craze: Lamborghini, for example, uses the Huracán material called Forged Carbon Fiber, which does not have the typical carbon fiber pattern look.
