There is no doubt that the Canon 5D series is one of the reference SLR cameras for many professional photographers, photojournalists, and enthusiasts looking for a very complete camera with great features. Its renewal is not done frequently because it is an advanced team, so when it comes time to relay with the recent Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, we can expect the incorporation of latest technologies and continue polishing a model that is difficult to throw something at fault.
Not in vain the 5D Mark III and earlier are still models that continue to circulate, being used frequently and reaching a good price in the second-hand market (they even accumulate prizes). What says a lot in favor of Canon with this model where he puts all his dedication to go commando the market of professional SLRs. For this new Mark IV Canon has wanted to add new technologies that nowadays are extended and that will facilitate the work of the photographer. Does it really meet? Is it worth your investment at a higher price than previous models? We have been able to put it to the test a few days to extract some valuations.
5D Mark IV is still a solid, serious and compliant camera
We must start from the fact that we expect a lot from this model, but it is foreseeable that we will not be disappointed since it is a consolidated range and that it sells a lot and well. Therefore, Canon has not modified its essential scheme with this model. It is a camera with continuous design and concept. It hardly changes by incorporating some new features to remain a solid, serious and fulfilling camera.
Taking a look at its characteristics we can barely highlight very slight external changes and some inside, which do justify its arrival on the market to relieve the Mark III.
Design and ergonomics
In this section, we highlight little new beyond purely anecdotal as its new weight (just 60 g less) and practically the same dimensions, which is almost negligible. Although the sensations in the hands, especially transmitted by users Mark III, appreciated somewhat lighter.
The new LCD screen is now better with more resolution and touch, although not articulated
We found an AF mode adjustment button that is appreciated by facilitating the task of controlling it, a rear screen that also maintains dimensions but now with the improved resolution to reach up to 1.62 million points, several options you could customize very complete and, above all, , now has touch control.
A remarkable novelty that perhaps could not have much relevance in such a range, but with practice is proven to be extremely useful on many occasions and that greatly facilitates the navigation through the menus, to something as simple as the enlargement or passage of images captured, as we usually do on smartphones or tablets. It is intuitive and it is well integrated.
Did someone say a flip-up screen?
Incorporating a better screen, by resolution and tactile capacity, it seems that it almost begs for it to be collapsible, as are lower models of Canon and that are very practical especially for captures in difficult positions and, let’s say, almost essential for the video capture.
However, we must conclude that it is a solid and robust camera, which transmits that feeling as soon as you hold it in your hand. Its body is made of magnesium alloy and is sealed, a construction guarantee that can be a value to take into account. Despite its size and weight, it is a camera that has achieved a perfect balance with its ergonomics, thanks to a grip achieved and ideal for any size of hands. And, of course, has a great balance when accompanied by a heavy and bulky optics. And without losing some lightness when we “fit” a light 50 mm being a very manageable team.
New sensor, new resolution
It was expected that the resolution of the sensor would increase to maintain the degree of competitiveness. As has been the case offering 30.4 megapixels. A resolution that seems right to us, to offer something manageable for reportage photography. If someone wants a higher resolution, Canon already offers two models that reach 50 megapixels.
The new sensor also brings improvements in color depth and dynamic range, which improves the results, especially when combined with some of the high-end lenses for this mount.
Another of the most striking novelties of the 5D Mark IV is the incorporation of Dual Pixel technology, which, once activated in the menu, performs a double capture in order to fine-tune in the post-processed settings such as improving focus, bokeh or parasitic lights. Of course, for now, this option of adjustments can only be made with the specific software of the manufacturer, the Canon Digital Photo Professional. For everything else, you can already use Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom that support the Mark IV files.
Focus and speed
In the focus section, we can only confirm that Canon has continued to substantially improve the previous model, due largely to the Dual Pixel AF, which manages to improve the quality and speed of the same, as well as new algorithms that allow a highly accurate tracking approach.
This combined with an improved burst, of up to 7 fps, making it a camera that performs very well in action scenes and sports. It is not a specific model but it solves many situations where speed is necessary and the response is very good.
Image quality and performance
As for the performance of the sensor, we can only say that it does not surprise us, it continues its good work in all kinds of situations and, now, with higher resolution, it allows us to make some cuts without losing too much. As far as its behavior is brilliant, especially together with its powerful processor and its fast autofocus, they turn it into the camera that one always wants to have to solve any job. That that comes out graceful of any scene and that always gives us the size.
It can be nuanced, as the fact that although it has improved its behavior in high sensitivities and, even with more pixels, we think it is still below competitive models. Although only in really very high values, which for many will not be of usual use. However, reaching up to 12,800 ISO maintains a decent level of detail and little loss of tonality. Above, it allows us to select more values but in which we can see a more noticeable loss and it is less usable for the most demanding image quality.
But even in the performance of the sensor we find the continuation line of Canon, since this model offers a response of natural color very similar to the rest of models of the brand, something that is noticeable notably in the RAW files, as opposed to the JPEGs of great quality, but always something more saturated with color.
In video, we find the arrival of the 4K (416 DCI format of 4,096 × 2,160 pixels to be exact, ie with a cut in the image of 1.64x), something that had not been incorporated would have placed below what was expected for many. The 4K is increasingly demanded by users and Canon includes it, with a nuance that will not please everyone, but there it is for those who need it. Something interesting and curious is that thanks to the tactile ability of the screen, not only can we control the focus point during recording, but it allows us to vary from 4K to Full HD during it. Offering the possibility of reaching up to 60 fps and 120 fps if we stay with 720p.
GPS and Wi-Fi
Two options that come as a novelty and that we value very positively are integrated GPS and wireless connectivity. As for the GPS indicate that it works correctly, that you can configure the time of connection intervals (so that the battery does not suffer in excess) and with the tests performed has quickly hit in practically all locations (although one has erred, we do not know whether by the integrated module itself or by a certain lack of coverage). Of course, it consumes enough battery, so we recommend activating it only when it is really necessary.
Something similar happens with wireless connectivity, with NFC technology integrated as well as with Wi-Fi, which works really well and comfortably with its corresponding official application. It allows us to remote trigger and copies captured images quickly. In the same way, if we keep it always connected, we will notice a shorter battery life.
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, the opinion of Xataka Foto
The Mark IV is the great camera that was expected. A professional camera mostly, very complete, serious, that solves very well and with options to defend themselves comfortably in any situation and scene. It is one of the favorite cameras for photojournalists and photographers precisely because it is a robust camera, manageable and with great global quality.
You can not fault its improved approach, its increased resolution or its overall performance. Although perhaps those who waited a bit more in the video section do not notice less enthusiasm, especially for its price. In any case, it is a very well compensated camera, which incorporates some novelties that are really useful and that today are almost indispensable for many professionals, such as GPS or Wi-Fi, and others, as the tactile capacity is welcome because it completes very well and improves its handling enormously.
Of course, pity that the screen is not collapsible, we believe it was a solution that is not at odds with maintaining the robustness and solidity of the body and, surely, many would have appreciated it.
However, it must be recognized that many were waiting for the arrival of this new model, that Canon has its loyal customers and that the Mark IV offers much of what was expected, without great surprises, but with a quality result and, together, a very well compensated team. The price would be the only thing we really see can mean more doubts about the purchase decision. A higher price than expected (3,999 euros) and higher than its previous model, is something that will make you think a lot. And more having an increasingly fierce competition, wherewith previous models almost reigned comfortably.
